My dear Helen—

The Crittenton Thanksgiving dinner went very well, although it was a hell of a lot of work. Irma Rhode came to the rescue, and we used her oven for one bird and the d’Argout for the other. Two different stuffings—one with toasted Italian bread crumbs, tarragon, chestnuts, onion and butter; the other, with apples, nuts, raisins and butter by the ton. The apples in ginger syrup were a sensation, and our mincemeat. Had a pound and a half of caviar to start off with and then turtle soup with Madeira. The turnips with mushrooms were loved by all. The pumpkin pie, we covered with brown sugar and chopped pecans and glazed it.

Reading galleys of a book by Waverly Root to be published by Knopf soon, called The Food of France, which is the book to end all on French food—absolutely superb. Have Philip find out when it is to be published. You’ll want it at once.
